E7018's coating is designed to minimize the amount of hydrogen that enters the weld pool. Hydrogen can cause "cold cracking" or hydrogen-induced cracking in high-strength steels. Proper storage in a welding oven is essential to maintain this low-hydrogen property.
While E6013 is a general-purpose rod with high penetration and a stable arc, E7018 provides significantly higher mechanical properties (ductility and toughness) and is required for structural, code-quality welding. E6013 is often preferred for light fabrication and sheet metal.
E7018 electrodes can be used with both AC and DCEP (DC Reverse Polarity). However, DCEP is generally preferred for deeper penetration and a smoother arc, especially in critical structural applications.
